Over time it’s easy for designs to become neglected as we live our busy lives around it. This begins to affect the legibility and consequently the purpose of designs as they begin to age, fade and distress. The natural imperfections and deconstruction create unique unfiltered visuals that should be celebrated instead of overlooked.

‘Wabi-sabi’ is a Japanese aesthetic that explores the beauty of objects considered “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete”. It encourages us to have more of a mindful approach to everyday life by appreciating the beauty in the mundane.

This publication explores the seven elements of ‘Wabi-sabi’ within graphic design. The analogue designs explore the process of aging and deconstruction through imagery and type. Artists will be reminded to appreciate and take influence from natural processes for a more tactile response within their work.
